Youlgrave is a village in Derbyshire, England, located in the south of the Peak District a few miles from Bakewell. It sits on the hillside just above the River Bradford, near where it meets the River Lathkill.

Due to its scenic Peak District location, Youlgrave has become a popular tourist destination. Visitors to the area are able to enjoy a range of activities including walking and cycling with tremendous sightseeing opportunities in the beautiful surrounding countryside. There are many trails to follow that suit all abilities, from novice through to the more experienced. There are several places serving food and drink for the long-term holidaymaker or casual day visitor to enjoy.

River View cottage is located where the Limestone Way crosses the River Bradford. The cottage has outstanding views – whether you are sat inside or outside – and is perfectly located for exploring The Peak District at all times of the year.
There are seating areas from which you can enjoy the scenery. Or after a long day exploring, you might want to curl up in front of the wood-burning stove.
If you have to mix business and pleasure, there is an office space set up with good internet access.

Walks

  • There are many walks going north, south, east and west from the cottage.
  • A range of ordnance survey maps are available in the lounge including some ‘Around and About’ maps which are ideally suited to guests looking to take short walks in the area.

Some of our favourites

  • Turn right to walk along the River Bradford to Middleton by Youlgrave (3-4 miles there and back)
  • Cross the bridge and take the Limestone Way to the Stone circle and Robin Hoods stride (approx. 2 hours there and back)
  • Turn left to walk along the coach road to where the River Bradford meets the River Lathkill at Alport. Follow the river Lathtkill to its source in a cave. (Time and distance depends on the route you choose to return home.)

Water sports

  • Offering a range of water sports. For example, kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, windsurfing. With kit available to hire.
  • Fly Fishing: The reservoir is stocked with brown and rainbow trout from local suppliers and 20 boats are available for hire.

Bike rides

  • There is a bridle path that starts near the cottage and heads out towards Robin Hoods Stride and Birchover.

  • Two of our favourites are along the old railway lines of the Tissington Trail and Monsal Trail.

 Stately homes

Nearby Haddon Hall (shown below) is an English country house on the River Wye which dates back to the 11th century. Only a 5 minute drive away, or you can walk there!

Films Haddon Hall was used in: Mary Queen of Scots (2018), Jane Eyre (2010), The other Boleyn Girl (2006) and there are more!

Peak Rail Heritage Railway (https://www.peakrail.co.uk/)

  • Discover the romance of travelling on a steam locomotive. Peak Rail travels through the Derbyshire countryside along a 4 miles track between Rowsley and Matlock. Various events take place throughout the year including afternoon tea most Saturdays.

All Saints Church, Youlgrave

  • The earliest documentary evidence of a church is 1150 with 14th-, 15th- and 16th- century elements.
  • Of note are the stained glass windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898). Burne-Jones worked closely with William Morris and together they were commissioned to design the east windows. The panels were produced by the William Morris workshop.
